Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Copper River School District Correspondence Study Program.  These frequently asked questions are for parents and students to explain the procedures and requirements of the Correspondence Study Program. We hope they will answer most of the questions we have had from the parents and students over the years about the program.

Does my child have to attend school?

Under Alaska State Law, children between the ages of 7 and 16 must attend school.

Does the Correspondence Study Program count as school attendance?

Yes, a student enrolled in the Correspondence Study Program is considered attending school under State Law. A child must either be enrolled in a regular day school program or in the correspondence program and must be participating on a regular basis.

Age:

1.   A student who is 5 years of age by August 15, can enter Kindergarten (birth certificate required) and 6 years of age by August 15, can enter Grade 1. Students enrolling in the high school program must have satisfactorily completed the eighth grade.

2.  A pre-school program is not offered for students under 5 years of age.

3.   The student must be less than 20 years of age (unless he/she qualifies for "Special Services").

The Copper River Correspondence Study Program is an approved statewide program and may enroll students from all districts within the state of Alaska.  You must be a resident of the state and intend to remain a resident in order for us to serve you.

In-district students desiring correspondence courses to make up for failure or non-completion of regular course work must pay the cost of taking those courses.

Note:  The district will pay for courses in the small high schools needed to supplement their limited curricular offerings.

What is a home teacher?

A student must have a responsible adult (usually a parent or guardian) who will agree to supervise and assist the student as his/her home teacher.  The home teacher is responsible to assist the student in completing homework, supervising tests, and returning student work for grading.  Even a child who seems to be an independent worker requires supervision to observe whether all work is actually being completed.  Following is a list of responsibilities for the home teacher:

1.   To provide a regular place for the student to work.

2.   To be present to assist the student on a regular full time basis in all educational study.

3.   To organize a study schedule that will permit the student to finish a year’s course.

4.   To direct and correct daily work.

5.   To supervise tests, making sure they are closed book.

6.   To see that lessons, tests, and exams are being sent in on a regular basis.

7.   To keep a log of all work sent and returned.

8.   To have the student at the appropriate achievement testing center to participate in the mandatory testing in the student’s local area.

9.   To notify the office of any changes in address, telephone, or email address.

10. To return all non-consumable supplemental items upon withdrawal.

The home teacher needs to be continually available to provide instruction to the student.  Teaching elementary children by correspondence study is a full‑time job.  The home teacher needs to maintain regular contact with the correspondence school office.

When can I enroll my child in the Correspondence Study Program?

1.   Preferably, the student should be enrolled by June 15th prior to starting the program in the fall.  Early enrollment ensures that materials will be ready for the student's entrance to the program.

2.   Enrollment will be accepted between May 1, and September 15, or until a certain cap of students is reached.

3.   The address, location, and phone number:
